Once again, the City of Edmonton’s Home$aver event was a rousing success. Hundreds of people queued up at the RONA South and RONA Namao locations early on May 24th, including one eager gentleman who arrived at 4:15am to secure his spot.
After the success of last year’s event, the City of Edmonton once again partnered with RONA and EPCOR to offer a variety of eco-friendly products at highly reduced prices. There were twice as many hot-ticket items based on last year’s demand, including 600 rain barrels, 200 programmable thermostats and 128 composters between the two RONA locations. We were happily surprised by the number of early birds waiting outside when we arrived for our 6:30am volunteer shift, several of whom were enjoying tea and coffee graciously provided at the South RONA by Landmark Group.
Fortunately, Green Saturday was not nearly as chaotic as Black Friday sales have been known to be. Anticipating the popularity of the rain barrels, interested customers received a ticket stub to guarantee their barrel. This allowed them time to peruse both the other items on sale and the displays and demonstrations put together by the City of Edmonton, EPCOR, and RONA. Of particular interest was the Waste Management demonstration on composting, staffed by certified Master Composter Recyclers.
Items sold quickly: after 15 minutes, the composters had vanished and the line-up to the register went toward the back of the store. The thermostats went next, disappearing around 8:30am; both varieties of LED lights were gone by 9am, and one sole push-mower held out until 9:45am. By 10:30am, the final low-flow showerhead was gone. Luckily, we came prepared with eco-friendly gifts to give away at our display table.
If you missed out on the great deals, or if you want to show off your new purchases, share a photo of yourself using an eco-friendly product in your home for a chance to win in the Home$aver contest!
