Editor’s Note: Today we start a series of video stories about City of Edmonton employees. In their own words. But, first, just a few of ours. Together, the 14,000 people who work for the City enable Edmontonians to live their best lives. We imagine what future communities and spaces could look like, we build bridges, maintain roads, we teach swimming lessons, keep people safe and provide services people need.
The thing that fills our cups and gets us going in the morning is a unified commitment to making the City of Edmonton a great place to live, work and play.
This is our story. This is the story of the United Way working committee.
The United Way working committee stepped up to give back.
Last year 11 employees from across the organization banded together to form the first ever United Way Working Committee. They came from different parts of the City, but shared the same purpose: to create pathways out of poverty for vulnerable individuals and families in the capital region.
They could not have predicted the impact they would have.. Together, they surpassed fundraising targets and participation goals. Together, they won a 2017 United Way Spirit Award.
And they kept going.
This year, City of Edmonton staff have already exceeded the City of Edmonton United Way campaign goal, pledging over $314,000—more than $10,000 above the initial goal.
Along with pledges, City staff donated 8,825 Tools for School items, 83 boxes of cereal for e4c nutrition program, and stuffed 317 backpacks for students and ETS buses for Edmonton’s Food Bank.
“These results are really a testament to the exceptional people and what we can accomplish when we work together,” says Jessica Monk, City of Edmonton United Way Campaign Chair.
Thank you to the United Way Working Committee and all our exceptional staff for stepping up to to give back to our community.
Thank you, too, to all of you who, in big ways or small, in ways seen or not so obvious, give back to the community we all serve.
