Calling all walkers, runners and cyclists!

Ready to take traffic safety to the streets? The 3rd annual Run Walk Ride 4 Traffic Safety (RWR) takes place on Saturday, April 26 from 9am to 1pm at Concordia University College. The family friendly event includes a 5 km walk/run, a 10 km run and a 10 km family cycling event – as well as exhibits, food and prizes. The RWR is ideal for both families who want to enjoy the arrival of warmer spring weather and for experienced runners looking to start their season.

Launched two years ago, the event helps to raise the profile of vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. Enhancing the level of traffic safety in Edmonton requires a commitment on the part of all road users, especially since most, if not all, of these collisions are preventable.

The RWR is also the kick off for the 6th annual International Conference on Urban Traffic Safety – a conference which will see over 250 delegates from around the world gather to share the latest traffic safety strategies.

“It is important to remember that traffic safety is about far more than just statistics, says Laura Thue with the Office of Traffic Safety, “The numbers represent mothers and fathers, daughters and sons, sisters, brothers and friends who are injured or killed every year on Edmonton roads. What we really need to think about are the long term impacts of those injuries and fatalities on families and communities. The financial costs are high, but the cost to people’s lives can be devastating and long-lasting.”

Proceeds from the Run Walk Ride 4 Traffic Safety go toward the Memorial and Traffic Safety Fund, administered by the Edmonton Community Foundation (www.ecfoundation.org). The fund represents a chance for family and friends to invest in a lasting legacy for victims of traffic collisions. Donations will fund research and various community traffic safety initiatives focused on reducing collisions, injuries and fatalities.

Registration, location and fee information can be found at http://www.rwr4trafficsafety.com/.

We look forward to seeing you there!
