High school students from around the world joined new friends from Alberta schools at the Festival of Youth Voices last month. The event, held at NAIT’s Centre for Applied Technology, was part of the Change for Climate Community Series leading up to the CitiesIPCC Cities and Climate Change Conference, March 5-7, in Edmonton. The students, some of whom are working on a White Paper for the conference, brought their stories and posters and hopes and fears and solutions to Edmonton for the NAIT event

Jasper Place High School’s project is about empowering individuals through student driven initiatives on climate change and urban farming! Making changes in Alberta government to empower individuals to make personal changes and to vote in elections.
Suhanee talks about waste management and public education in New Delhi! These include brochures to educate people as well as anti-firecracker campaigns and cleanliness drives in Subway stations. They have a created friendship bracelets that have seeds in them, so when disposed, a plant will grow.
Julia explains that currently Edmonton is developing and funding sustainable solar energy sources, such as solar panels and wind turbines. In addition, there are currently 931 diesel busses that are being transitioned to electric energy, and she talks about the installation of bike lines to encourage other modes of transportation.
Kevina tells us about Indonesia’s current initiatives to fight climate change! These include the Project to Plant 1000 Trees, Car-free Sundays, and fashion shows of recycled projects! They have also implemented garbage sorting systems to be implemented in schools and on streets.
Judy from China explains how switching from coal to natural gas has reduced smog and turned their grey skies back to blue again. If we start small, we will achieve great progress in the future!
Naomie discusses disproving myths about energy methods through energy alternatives and solar panels, as well as encouraging more education in school. Her poster is about the process of disproving myths through concrete learning about energy conservative alternative methods and production in Junior High Students. Concrete learning proved that students before and after the experiment learned a lot more about disproved myths about energy production and made them more likely to turn to energy alternatives in the future!
Leila and Diego from Calgary discuss installing more living walls because this uses less water than traditional growing. It will reduce carbon dioxide and limit energy and water use in schools. Living walls purify air quality and reduce CO2 emissions in buildings.
Pedro says that amazon reforestation has caused the rivers to dry out which leads to severe rains, floods and the water crisis in Brazil! He explains that if we stop the reforestation and agree to plant more trees than we cut down, we will reverse the extreme weather that the country is experiencing.
This poster showed the effects of acid rain on plants. Experiment one had normal rainwater and the second one had acid water (lemon juice and water to create the PH of 4, similar to acid rain). As shown, the acid rain plant is tilted and shriveled. This shows that the effects of climate change, caused by pollution, changes the temperature to be warmer and the ozone layer can not handle the heat, which creates global warming.
The third poster from Aurora Academic Charter School talks about making plastics with vegetable oil instead of petroleum. The student explains how important it is to find a way to use less petroleum to help the effects of climate change.
Shauna from Calgary suggests that cities begin implementing urban agriculture. This will reduce greenhouse gas emissions based on food production and combat how food is being grown and from where!
