Create Memories, Not Garbage

Some handy hints on how to reduce waste during the holiday season.

The holidays are a special time in Edmonton when we gather to celebrate, share meals and exchange gifts. We also create a lot of waste. In fact, Edmonton’s household garbage production nearly doubles at the end of December, compared to other winter weeks.

What’s one of the easiest ways to reduce holiday waste? Create memories, not garbage!

Skip the mall this year, and gift experiences instead of stuff. Here are some of our favourite ideas to get you started.

Event or attraction tickets. Treat a friend or family member to a play, a concert or a night out at the movies. Take kids to the zoo, the waterpark or one of Edmonton’s many family-friendly attractions.

Learn skills. Your teachers weren’t lying; learning can be fun! Gift the experience of learning a new skill with a cooking class, ski lessons or dance instruction. Or try a class where your loved one can choose and make their own gift, like building a terrarium or painting ceramics. Go together for a fun and memorable time!

Dinner out. Take a friend or loved one out for a nice meal and some great conversation. Looking for the perfect gift for parents of young kids? Send them on a worry-free night out with a restaurant gift certificate and offer to babysit.

Pamper them. Give the gift of self-care and relaxation. Spa services, massage or a salon gift card will make a lovely treat for your loved one, especially in the wake of the busy holiday season!

Charitable donation. Spread a little holiday joy to someone in need. Make a monetary or in-kind donation to a friend’s favourite charity, or donate your time as a volunteer.

Share your favourite holiday waste reduction tip on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, using the hashtag #WastelessHolidays, and you could win one of eight wasteless prizes. Find more info and full giveaway rules at edmonton.ca/wastelessholidays.
